Seattle Kayaking

SEATTLE  >  SEATTLE HOTELS  >  SEATTLE ATTRACTIONS  >  SEATTLE AIRPORT HOTELS

Surrounded by Puget Sound, Lake Washington and Lake Union (as well as the falling rain that visits us so often!), water is a large part of our lifestyle. One of the best ways to explore the water and the city is by kayak. Kayaks can be rented at a number of locations and allow you to discover Seattle's houseboat community at eye level, enjoy a Northwest-style safari spotting turtles, red wing blackbirds and eagles in the Washington Park Arboretum, or paddle from Lake Union through the Hiram Chittenden Locks into the salt water of Puget Sound.

If you are an experienced Seattle paddler, chances are you have already explored Lake Union, as the majority of resident paddlers probably took their first strokes here. Lake Union has perhaps the highest year-round density of sea kayaks, perhaps nation- or even worldwide! It is usually smoother than local saltwater destinations.

The water is warmer than the Sound in the summer months, making it a good place to develop skills. The fascinating shoreline of shipyards, houseboats, yachts, and shore-accessible eateries and shops makes it a repeat destination for any Seattleite with a few hours to spare.

A tour of Lake Union could be combined with excursions either east or west along the ship canal, perhaps with a shuttle to launch points in Ballard or the Arboretum.
