A hint to those who plan to walk Seattle
is as hilly as a Hollywood starlet, and the area between Pike Place Market and
the Waterfront is one of the most precipitous parts of town. There's an
eight-story drop from the market down to the boardwalk. This makes for great
views, but it's an exhausting climb or descent for those on foot.
To give your feet a break when walking
up from the Waterfront, take the elevator in the parking complex to the top,
cross Western Ave and look for the sign with a pointing hand; the elevator to
the market level is just below it and you can take this up to the market. On the
return journey, take the well hidden elevator behind the fish markets in Pike
Place to the bottom then head into the parking structure across Western Ave and
take the elevator down four stories to the Waterfront.
If you'd rather walk, you can take the
Hill climb Corridor up many steps from the aquarium at the Waterfront, it exits
out the back of the market's Main Arcade. The good news is that the entire
trajectory is flanked by shops, eateries and potted greenery. You can also take
the Harbor Steps, a landscaped cascade of stairs that sweeps up to below the
Seattle Art Museum.
