Getting Up/Down to the Seattle Waterfront

A hint to those who plan to walk Seattle is as hilly as a Hollywood starlet, and the area between Pike Place Market and the Waterfront is one of the most precipitous parts of town. There's an eight-story drop from the market down to the boardwalk. This makes for great views, but it's an exhausting climb or descent for those on foot.

To give your feet a break when walking up from the Waterfront, take the elevator in the parking complex to the top, cross Western Ave and look for the sign with a pointing hand; the elevator to the market level is just below it and you can take this up to the market. On the return journey, take the well hidden elevator behind the fish markets in Pike Place to the bottom then head into the parking structure across Western Ave and take the elevator down four stories to the Waterfront.

If you'd rather walk, you can take the Hill climb Corridor up many steps from the aquarium at the Waterfront, it exits out the back of the market's Main Arcade. The good news is that the entire trajectory is flanked by shops, eateries and potted greenery. You can also take the Harbor Steps, a landscaped cascade of stairs that sweeps up to below the Seattle Art Museum.

Right in the thick of things at Pike Place, the  is an elegant and architecturally interesting hotel and the only lodging in the venerable Pike Place Market. This 70-room boutique hotel has large rooms, many of which enjoy grand views onto market activity and Puget Sound.

Take a spectacular cruise to exciting spots in Alaska or the Pacific Northwest. - The Port of Seattle is ready to set sail for a very busy cruise season. Seattle will welcome nearly 200 cruise ship visits and nearly 754,605 passengers during the cruise season.

Sightsee around Puget Sound and on the way to Victoria, B.C. on the high-speed Victoria Clipper catamaran. Departs from Pier 69.

Watch the sunset over the Olympic mountains from Shilshole Bay Marina's promenade. Dine and shop at the homeport of the North Pacific fishing fleet at Fishermen's Terminal.
