SEATTLE'S FIRST HILL
First Hill, with its commanding position directly to the east and above
downtown, became the foremost status neighborhood for early Seattleites.
Throughout the area you'll still find traces of the early glory, including a few
magnificent old mansions and some excellent examples of early Seattle
architecture. But most mansions of the once mighty have long since been torn
down and replaced by hospitals. Known as 'Pill Hill,' First Hill is home to
three major hospitals, Harborview Medical
Center, Swedish Medical Center/First
Hill, and Virginia Mason Medical Center. With the accompanying research and support facilities, it
can seem indeed that everything up here is related to the medical industry.
Getting to Seattle's First Hill
To reach First Hill, catch bus No 2 on the west side of 3rd Ave downtown and get
off at the Swedish Medical Center. First Hill is out of the Ride Free Area,
however, so be prepared to pay up if you take the bus. On foot it's a short
walk uphill from downtown. From Westlake Center, head over to University St and
walk uphill through Freeway Park or, if you're in the business district, walk
straight up Madison St to Terry Ave, and you'll be at the Sorrento Hotel.
First Hill has been home to
Seattle University, a private Jesuit university, since 1898. Also located on
the hill are Northwest School and Seattle Academy of Arts and Sciences--two
highly regarded private schools--and the Catholic O'Dea High School, as well as
several churches that have become city landmarks: Trinity Episcopal Parish
Church, St. James Cathedral, and Seattle First Baptist Church. |
