GETTING AROUND PIKE PLACE MARKET
Pike Place is made up of several buildings, covering about eight warren like
blocks at the top of the bluff overlooking the Waterfront. It's easy to get lost
here - in fact, experiencing a slight sense of mayhem and dislocation is part of
the charm of your initial acquaintance with this leviathan. Don't let the
sometimes seedy nature of the neighborhood bother you, the streets around the
market are still centers for sex shops and off-putting vagrancy, but there's
very little real danger in the area. To help you find your way around, pick up a
copy of Welcome to the Pike Place Market, a brochure with a map and directory of
market shops. It's available throughout the market and at the information booth

If you're coming from downtown, simply walk down Pike St toward the Waterfront;
you can't miss the huge 'Public Market' sign etched against the horizon.
Incidentally, the sign and clock, installed in 1927, constituted one of the
first pieces of outdoor neon on the West Coast. From the top of Pike St and 1st
Ave, stop and survey the bustle and vitality of the market: buskers strum and
sing, baguettes stick out of shoppers' backpacks, towers of artichokes loom in
market stalls and bouquets of flowers bloom in the arms of passersby.
Walk down
the cobblestone street, past perpetually gridlocked cars (don't even think of
driving down to Pike Place) and, before walking into the market, stop and shake
the bronze snout of Rachel the Market Pig, the de facto mascot and presiding
spirit of the market. The life-size piggy bank, carved by Whidbey Island artist
Georgia Gerber and named after a real pig, collects about $6000 dollars each
year. The funds are pumped back into market social services.

AROUND PIKE PLACE
Pike Place Market is on the western edge of downtown, off 1st Ave. Bus Nos
15,18, 21, 22 and 56 run up and down 1st Ave from Pioneer Square. You can also
take any bus along 3rd Ave and get off at the University Street Station, then
walk west toward the water. Along the Waterfront Streetcar route, Pike St
Station is the stop for Pike Place Market; from there you need to climb the hill
to the market itself. On foot, the market is just minutes from most downtown
hotels. Walk down Pike, Pine or Stewart Sts toward the Waterfront and you're
there. |
