Hotel Review of the Courtyard Seattle Lake Union
Aug 7, 2010
The main thing this hotel has going for it is its location and the views (should
you be lucky enough to get a room with view of Lake Union).
We recently used this hotel to accommodate guests for our wedding at the
adjacent Virginia V (which was incredible). While they didn't drop the ball
entirely, they definitely left some things to be desired.
First off, coordinating our wedding block proved to be more difficult than we
would have imagined, though for this we blame Marriott more than this specific
location. The planners for wedding blocks seem to be located at corporate
headquarters and as a result it was often difficult to get consistent
information regarding our local block. When we tried to get info from this
location we were always told that they couldn't do anything and we needed to
contact the above mentioned planners.
We arranged for our guests to receive gift bags we had put together as they
checked into the hotel. However, as we spoke to our guests we came to find out
that a number of them had not received their bags upon arrival.
The first room they put us in (again the bride and groom, which they were aware
of) had views of the building's ventilation systems and stains on the walls.
While they were quick to give us another room, it was kind of disheartening to
be given that room in the first place. In addition, a large number of our guests
were placed in rooms with equally bad views, which isn't so bad except for the
fact that they sell you on the views when you're checking the place out as a
possible venue.
Finally, on our last night we were hanging out with some friends in our room
(about 5 total) around 3AM. We were keeping it fairly quiet, but management came
up and knocked on the door. Fair enough, it wasn't early and I can appreciate
the situation. However, instead of asking us to keep it down we were told, "If
we have to come up here again we will kick you all out of the hotel." It was not
the warning but the manner in which it was given that we found offensive. While
we understand the issue of noise complaints, we did bring them thousands of
dollars of business and a little tact might have been appreciated. Threats don't
typically make you feel like a valued customer.
Anyway, the purpose of this review was to relay our experience to anyone who
might be thinking of using this hotel to accommodate a large number of guests.
While the location and views are nice, this hotel is very disorganized and we
found it added quite a bit of stress to any already complex situation.

An okay Marriott but i felt quite nickled and dimed during my stay there...a
dollar (?!) for an apple sold at the front desk (when other hotels i have gone
to offer fruit and wow, even COOKIES for free!) 20 bucks a night (PLUS tax) for
parking, a room that had a view of a parking lot and smelled like
chemicals....ok, the bed is nice, but the towels are thin and rough and the
internet confusing (i couldnt check my e-mail and that has never happened to me
at any other hotel lately--i have no idea what program their computers are on
but i didn't care for it)
OK location (everything is a walk but it can be a nice one if the weather is
good and there are some good restaurants nearby) but overall, when the only
thing that impresses me about a property is its gym (they have a pool too but it
was crazy/busy with kids all the time) and its bed...that's not quite enuf at
these prices

I just came back from a stay at this hotel (3/26-3/28) and had a very pleasant
stay. We were in town specifically for a cervical cancer retreat but we also
planned on sightseeing as well. There is no shuttle to/from the airport so be
prepared to pay approximately $45 for a cab ride. They do not have flat fares so
traffic and the speed of the driver will affect this price.
We did not have a car so we did not have to worry about the parking fee. Our
room faced Lake Union and the view was FABULOUS! I did not experience any room
noise as others noted except when I opened the window and of course that is
expected. Watching the sunrise and people rowing on the lake, the boats sailing
and the seaplanes taking off/landing was fantastic.

The location is close to the space needle ($5 cab ride) and there are plenty of
restaurants in walking distance. Jillians (sports bar) is across the street and
Outback Steakhouse is in the next block. There are three great restaurants to
the left of the hotel that have early and late happy hour. We went to all three!
The bar/lounge is really nice and the bartenders are really friendly. The front
desk staff was GREAT. They were very accommodating with suggestions, letting us
borrow items (tape, scissors) from the front desk, and helping us with meeting
room set up.
There is no 24 hour room service so that was disappointing. We did eat the
breakfast buffet one morning and that was $13.95.
Overall, I had a great stay. If I visited Seattle again, I would probably stay
at the Marriott Residence Inn only because they had balconies, but they lacked
many amenities that the Courtyard had so it would be a toss up!

This Courtyard is located in an ideal location for the business or vacation
traveller. The locale, services, hotel staff, ... all rate amongst the top
Marriott’s that i visit each year.

I find interesting that the hotel was not full by any means and as a member in
their preferred club, I did not rate a room with a view of the lake. The towels
were dismal at best and I shared that with the staff at checkout and received an
"I'm sorry" but the delivery was certainly not heartfelt. Total cost for one
night is near 200 dollars. Room was 139, plus tax, parking 20, plus tax and that
gets you right up to 200 bucks. I would likely not stay there again. Not enough
value for my cash!

I have stayed in nicer Courtyards but this was in a great location. It had a
nice bar and sitting area with gas logs. We were right across from the Lake. The
room was ok, wasn't there much. The staff was very friendly and helpful.
We had a great time on our trip. :)

Some good, some not so good.
Firstly, this hotel has a great view of Lake Union, a great location and there's
a great restaurant and coin laundry in the hotel.
BUT, while the even # rooms overlooking Lake Union offer some good views, IMHO
they were more than outweighed by the traffic noise that woke me up starting
around 5:30 AM. My advice, stay here, but ask for a room on the opposite side of
the street from Lake Union for a good night's sleep. Also, be prepared to pay
$20/day for parking.
