Sleeping in Seattle
Hotels in Seattle run the gamut from functional motor inn to incredibly plush
places that make you feel decadent just by peeking into the lobby. Some of the
finest accommodations are in older, restored hotels such as the Sorrento and the
Fairmont Olympic.
But there are also several options for slightly less expensive, equally
charismatic hotels, particularly in Belltown.
Parking is a major hassle in Seattle - it's been said that much of the
population of Portland, Oregon, consists of people who couldn't find a place to
park in Seattle, so they kept driving in ever-widening circles until they wound
up in Portland.
Downtown Seattle real estate is at a premium, and finding a hotel here with free
parking is like discovering an extra $20 in your pocket while doing laundry.
Lodging can get tight in the popular summer months, specifically July, August
and September. During other times of the year, large conventions or special
events can make finding a room difficult, especially if you want to stay in
central Seattle. It pays to plan ahead when you're booking a room.
Hotel prices also soar in summer: mid range hotels cost $90 to $170 a night and
classier hotels easily double that. But a few older hotels yet to be infused
with renovation dollars offer cheap accommodations right in town. These offer
good value and loads of atmosphere, but be prepared to book in advance in
summer.
Be aware, though, that prices can vary wildly depending on demand and whether
there are festivals or events going on in town. Seattle hotel rooms are also
subject to a variable room tax of at least 14%.
Options for out-of-season travelers are excellent. From mid-November through
March 31, most downtown Seattle hotels offer great discounts again it depends on
supply and demand.
Most of the downtown Hotels offer some kind of parking program with in-and-out
privileges, but you'll pay handsomely for it, usually between $12 and $20 a day.
If you have a car, you'll need to factor the parking fees into the cost of
staying downtown. Instead consider staying near Seattle Center, where most
lodgings offer free parking. |
